Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Background History: Mastermind genius creator George Lucas had suggested to Steven Spielberg in having the third Indiana Jones movie be a type of haunted mansion story, which Diane Thomas who was the screen writer of the Romancing the Stone film, wrote a screenplay based on this ingenious supernatural thriller idea. However, without hesitation, Steven Spielberg completely and utterly rejected this particular idea for being silly and much too similar to the Poltergeist movie, which Steven Spielberg had co written and produced.

Next, George Lucas wanted to utilize the Holy Grail for the opening sequence of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which was to take place in Scotland in Europe. At first, George Lucas decided to have the Holy Grail with a grounding in pagan theology. The main supernatural relic of Last Crusade would focus on another unnamed Christian artifact located in Africa.

Once again, Steven Spielberg didn't agree with the Holy Grail concept, which Steven Spielberg thought was too existential and esoteric even after George Lucas wanted to give the Holy Grail the power to heal and provide immortality to Humans. During September 1984, George Lucas wrote a short plot synopsis called Indiana Jones and the Monkey King. This script summary had Indy Jones fighting a ghost in Scotland, then the main part of the movie was about Indiana Jones searching for the Fountain of Youth in Africa.
